One of the more interesting sites in Providence is the WaterFire located in Waterplace Park. From March to October, boaters dressed all in black tend fires on the Providence River. Other places to visit include the shops along Thayer Street, the Italian restaurants on Federal Hill, and the nightlife of Downcity. While you're in town, visit the Rhode Island State House, which has gorgeous architecture including a marble dome. If you're visiting during June or October, stop by what residents like to call the Stroll, involving restaurants and boutiques around the city offering samples. Also in the city are campuses such as Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design.
If music is your interest, there are some great venues for bands of any size. The Dunkin' Donuts Center has some big name acts and the Century Lounge, Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel, and Living Room are perfect places to hear some lesser known acts. Stop by the Providence Performing Arts Center to see the Rhode Island Orchestra. For more shopping and entertainment, the Providence Place Mall has an IMAX theater as well as a number of shops and restaurants.
